Assam's flood situation improved on Tuesday, with no fresh fatalities reported, the number of affected people falling to 4.45 lakh, and water levels receding in several districts, officials said. The death toll remained at 68, and no person was reported missing, according to an official bulletin. Read Full Story Officials said six districts continued to be affected by the deluge, while relief, rescue and restoration work remained under way. According to officials, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan) were still impacted by the floods.
Charaideo remained the worst-hit district with 1.88 lakh affected people, followed by Sivasagar with 1.44 lakh and Jorhat with 74,458. Till Sunday, more than 5.24 lakh people across five districts were affected. Altogether 90 relief camps were operational, sheltering 28,695 displaced people, while 94 relief distribution centres were also functioning, the bulletin said. The Dhansiri (South) river was flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district. Multiple agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF and civil defence personnel, were carrying out rescue and relief operations. A total crop area of 37,139.52 hectares remained submerged, and damage to houses, roads and other infrastructure was reported from various affected districts.
The central team, led by MHA Joint Secretary M Ramachandrudu, visited Sivasagar on Monday to review the flood situation in Upper Assam. State ministers Keshab Mahanta and Bimal Borah, along with local officials, accompanied the team. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a social media post that power restoration work was under way in phases. He said, "Since this morning, the number of families without power has declined by another 25 per cent. As floodwaters continue to recede, power supply is being restored across more affected areas. I will continue to share regular updates and keep you posted until power is restored to every affected household." Sarma also said that with water receding, disinfection and fogging drives had started across villages to prevent any disease outbreak.
Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain said steps were being taken to bury livestock and animals killed in the floods. He said, "The recent floods in Assam have sadly claimed the lives of many livestock. To prevent water contamination and the spread of diseases, the deceased animals are being buried and disposed of scientifically. This is an important step to protect public health and the environment." Overall, officials said the flood situation was improving, though several districts remained affected and relief and restoration measures continued. Ends
