The 24-year-old clocked 13.76 seconds to finish third in Heat 1, progressing to the final as the sixth-fastest overall. However, in the final later that evening, an injured Shirse could only manage 15.39 seconds, finishing eighth and last on Monday.

His national record stands at an impressive 13.27 seconds. Shirse revealed that the injury occurred just before the final during warm-up. “In the warm-up, I suffered a Navicular stress fracture in my left leg. I didn’t want to pull out so I told my physio to tape it," he told PTI after the race. Despite the setback, Shirse chose to compete, driven by the significance of the moment. “I am the first Indian to qualify for the 110m hurdles final in the CWG, so I didn’t want to let the whole nation down (by pulling out)," he added. The athlete said it was too early to assess his chances for the upcoming Asian Games, scheduled for September-October.

“This is not a new injury; it had happened earlier also. I will have to get scans first," he said. In the heats, Shirse finished behind England’s Samuel Bennett, who topped Heat 1 with a time of 13.20 seconds and went on as the overall leader. According to the competition rules, the first three athletes in each heat, along with the next two fastest, qualified for the final. Shirse’s season-best effort of 13.27 seconds, which also stands as the national record, was achieved during the Indian Athletics Series 9 in Ludhiana last month, underlining his strong form leading into the Games.
