Two men in Jaipur killed their friend over a dispute about who would pay the liquor party bill and later searched YouTube for videos on how to evade the police after the crime, including how investigators trace suspects and the punishment for murder, police said on Tuesday. The murder took place at a hotel on July 25. The accused, who switched their mobile phones to flight mode and planned to flee to Gujarat, were arrested in Rajasthan's Dausa after an extensive investigation involving CCTV analysis and technical surveillance.
Read Full Story According to Jaipur Deputy Commissioner of Police Prashant Kiran, the case came to light after the body of Dinesh alias Darshan was found in a hotel room in the city. Hotel records showed that the victim had checked in with two friends, Sanjay Kumar Kasotiya and Nitesh Gawariya, who disappeared after the incident with their mobile phones switched off. Police then launched a manhunt. Investigators examined footage from more than 300 CCTV cameras and tracked the suspects' movements across hotels, bus stands, railway stations and toll plazas before apprehending them in Dausa based on a tip-off.
During interrogation, the accused confessed that the trio had gathered at the hotel because the victim needed money. After consuming alcohol, an argument broke out over who would pay for the liquor bill, following which the two strangled Dinesh with a scarf, police said. Police said the accused attempted to destroy evidence by taking the victim's mobile phone, breaking its SIM card and putting their own phones on flight mode. While hiding at a hotel in Dausa, they used Wi-Fi to search YouTube for ways to avoid arrest, understand how police investigate murder cases and learn about the legal punishment for the offence.
They had also planned to escape to Gujarat. During their time on the run, the accused visited the Khatu Shyam temple in Sikar before returning to Dausa, where they were arrested while preparing to flee the state.
