The decision was cleared at a Cabinet meeting led by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as the country grapples with higher fuel prices driven by renewed geopolitical tensions.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Giorgia Meloni said escalating international tensions had once again pushed up fuel prices, making transportation more expensive and increasing the cost of everyday goods. She described the tax cut as a “timely and responsible" measure to provide immediate relief. “We know it doesn’t solve the problem. But it is a timely and responsible response," Giorgia Meloni said, adding that the government would continue monitoring the situation and decide whether further action is needed before the current decree expires. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said the temporary diesel tax cut, along with separate relief measures for truck drivers and farming businesses, would cost the government €125 million.
Giorgetti said the Cabinet would review the situation again on August 4, when it could consider additional measures, including support to reduce electricity and gas bills if energy prices remain elevated. He added that Italy and Germany remain among the European countries hardest hit by rising energy costs because of their reliance on fossil fuels and their large industrial sectors. The spike in fuel and consumer prices linked to the conflict in West Asia has increased pressure on Giorgia Meloni’s government, which is trying to shield household purchasing power while balancing Italy’s strained public finances.
