Amid the ongoing inter-state water dispute over the Mekedatu project, the chief ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are set to meet directly for the first time to hold discussions on the controversial balancing reservoir. The project aims to regulate water flow from both sides, but has faced persistent issues between the neighbouring states.
In Parliament, the Jal Shakti Minister addressed a question regarding the matter in the Rajya Sabha, citing a Supreme Court verdict that clarified state rights regarding reservoir construction on state territory. The decision indicates that permission from other states is not required for a balancing reservoir within a state's own land, reaffirming that external objections do not apply.
