The Meghalaya Cabinet on Monday approved the Electric Vehicle Policy, 2026, offering a Rs 25,000 incentive and a full waiver of registration fees to encourage people to buy electric vehicles in the state. The Cabinet also cleared other steps linked to the power sector, including the appointment of a Chief Technical Advisor for power generation and approval of Rs 22.37 crore as land compensation for a transmission line project. He said every buyer of an electric vehicle will get a Rs 25,000 incentive, while registration fees for such vehicles will be fully waived. Similar incentives will also be available for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. 'NEW POLICY WOULD RISE EV NUMBERS' Marak said there are already more than 5,000 electric vehicles on roads in Meghalaya and expressed confidence that the new policy would lead to a sharp rise in their numbers. He also said the government does not expect major difficulties in setting up charging stations, adding that suitable sites for commercial charging stations have already been identified.
The Cabinet also reviewed the Vehicle Scrappage Policy, which was notified last year. Under this policy, owners who scrap vehicles older than 15 years can use the scrappage certificate to buy a new electric vehicle and claim the incentives. In another decision, the Cabinet approved the appointment of retired Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited chief engineer BM War as Chief Technical Advisor (Generation) to the Power Department to support the state's power generation plans. It also sanctioned Rs 22.37 crore towards land compensation for a 6.5-km, 132 KV transmission line connecting the proposed 220/132 KV Secondary Substation with the proposed 132/33 KV Mawkhanu Substation.
The approval also includes compensation for the Right of Way, clearing the way for timely implementation of the project. Overall, the Cabinet's decisions focused on promoting electric mobility and strengthening power infrastructure in the state. Ends
