A scuffle broke out between rival Congress factions at the district party office in Belagavi on Monday during a consultation meeting on the selection of the city Congress president, police said. The incident occurred while AICC observer Manoj Chauhan was seeking the views of party workers on appointing the next Belagavi City Congress president and other district-level office-bearers.
Supporters of former MLA Ramesh Kudachi and another faction allegedly pushed and jostled each other after certain remarks triggered protests from a section of workers, party sources said. Read Full Story The argument quickly escalated into a scuffle before others intervened, they added.
Congress MLA Asif Sait, however, downplayed the incident and denied reports of serious infighting within the party. "There was no clash or fight. Workers merely expressed their opinions, leading to some misunderstanding and arguments. Chauhan adequately addressed the questions raised," he told reporters.
Tension prevailed at the party office for some time before police personnel reached the spot and brought the situation under control, preventing any further escalation. Ends
