State-owned Bank of Baroda on Monday confirmed a cybersecurity incident involving the compromise of an employee’s email account, after reports emerged that a large cache of customer-related data had been leaked on the dark web. The disclosure has raised concerns among customers, particularly as the leaked information is reported to include sensitive personal and banking documents. Bank Of Baroda Data Leak According to Bank of Baroda, the breach did not involve its core banking systems. Instead, the incident stemmed from the compromise of an employee email account, which resulted in “unauthorised access to certain data." In a statement, the bank said it had promptly identified the incident, implemented containment measures and launched a comprehensive forensic investigation. It also said it was working closely with relevant authorities to assess the scope and impact of the breach. “The bank’s core banking systems were not accessed and continue to remain secure," the lender said.
What Data Was Allegedly Leaked? Cybersecurity researcher Srikanth L, founder of Cashless Consumer, told Reuters that the leaked dataset appears to contain customer information, identification documents, loan-related records and internal audit documents. According to reports, the data surfaced on a dark web platform on Saturday and was as a repository containing more than 700 GB of information. The ransomware monitoring platform Ransomware.live reportedly carried a July 24 listing claiming that the leaked dataset includes between 100,000 and 300,000 customer application forms, along with photographs and identity documents submitted during account opening. Reports suggest the leaked files may contain Aadhaar-related documents Savings and current account records Loan application documents NetBanking user information NRI banking records Corporate banking documents Internal audit records The exact number of affected customers has not yet been confirmed. Who Is Behind the Leak? According to multiple reports, a hacking group known as TripleX has claimed responsibility for publishing the data online. However, neither Bank of Baroda nor government authorities have publicly confirmed the authenticity of all claims made by the group.
