Venkatesh has called for declaration of July 25 as ‘Yuvodaya Day’ or ‘Day of Youth Awakening’ across the country every year as the date reminds Indian politics that the voice of the nation’s youth cannot be ignored. In a statement here on Monday, Mr. Venkatesh said, “July 25 is not merely a date. It is a symbol of youth power, student movements and democratic awakening. The day has entered the pages of history by demonstrating that when the youth, who shape the country’s future, raise their voice in unison, even the most powerful government is compelled to bow to public opinion.” He said the struggle waged by millions of students and Gen Z youth for education, transparency and justice was not just a protest, but a democratic movement that challenged the arrogance of those in power.
July 25, he said, had sent a clear message to the country’s rulers that there was a limit to the patience of young people and that any attempt to play with their aspirations would trigger a nationwide people’s movement. Venkatesh said that whenever a government promised employment to youth but undermined their future through question paper leaks, recruitment irregularities, examination mismanagement and failures in the education sector, young people had every democratic right to raise their voice in protest. “The victory of that democratic right is what ‘Yuvodaya Day’ represents,” he said. He further stated that political power was not permanent in a democracy, but the strength of the youth was enduring.
July 25, he said, conveyed the message that if young people united against the arrogance of power, administrative apathy and attempts to suppress the voice of the people, change would become inevitable. Drawing a parallel with national commemorative days, Mr. Venkatesh said that just as August 15 is celebrated as Independence Day, January 26 as Republic Day and October 2 as Gandhi Jayanti, July 25 should be recognised as “Yuvodaya Day”—a day marking the democratic awakening of the youth. He called upon colleges, universities, youth organisations and public institutions to observe the day every year to pass on the values of youth-led democratic struggles to future generations.
“The future of the country is not shaped only within the walls of Parliament; it is shaped in the dreams of students. And when those dreams are threatened, it is the youth who write history. July 25 is one such historic day. Therefore, it should hereafter remain permanently etched in the nation’s memory as Yuvodaya Day,” Mr. Venkatesh said.
