The Saroornagar police arrested a 22-year-old habitual offender for possessing an illegal country-made pistol and a live round, foiling what police suspect could have been a planned criminal act. The accused, Mohd. Imran alias Ibbu, an autorickshaw driver and resident of Shanker Nagar in Saroornagar, was apprehended at around 8 p.m. on Sunday at an open place in Bhagath Singh Nagar following a tip-off. Police seized a country-made pistol, one live round and a mobile phone from his possession.
During interrogation, Imran allegedly told investigators that he had purchased the weapon and ammunition for ₹40,000 from a man identified as Shakir, a native of Bihar, whom he had met while working at a scrap shop in Rajendranagar about a year ago. He allegedly kept the firearm for nearly one year and had carried it with him on Sunday intending to use it for an illegal activity when he was intercepted by the police.
According to the police, Imran is a habitual property offender with 17 criminal cases registered against him across various police stations in the LB Nagar Zone. These include seven cases at Vanasthalipuram Police Station, five at LB Nagar, three at Chaitanyapuri and one each at Saroornagar and Hayathnagar police stations. Originally from Jampaka Sahit village in Geesugonda mandal of Warangal district, Imran dropped out of school after Class VII and took up odd jobs before working as an autorickshaw driver, police said.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway to trace the source of the firearm and ascertain whether it was intended to be used in any specific offence. Police are also trying to apprehend the alleged arms supplier, Shakir.
