A political storm has erupted over alleged police excesses during student protests across India. In Bihar's Siwan, a police officer was suspended after visuals surfaced showing him firing an AK-47 during a student demonstration that turned violent. Meanwhile, sources revealed that Rapid Action Force personnel used pellet guns during the July 20 Sansad Chalo protest in Delhi, leaving at least four protesters injured.
The Central Reserve Police Force is preparing a detailed investigation report on the incident. Adding to the pressure, the Supreme Court observed that peaceful protests cannot be brutalized and mere agitation does not justify a lathi charge, emphasizing the need for proper protocols to handle demonstrations. Ashutosh Ranka, spokesperson for the CJP, along with Kapil Sibal, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to withdraw all FIRs lodged against protesting students in states like Bengal and Bihar, warning that demonstrations will resume if their demands are not met.
The opposition and ruling party continue to trade allegations over the handling of student agitation.
