Tejas Shirse made history on Monday by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the men’s 110m hurdles final at the Commonwealth Games. The 24-year-old clocked 13.76 seconds to finish third in Heat 1 and sixth overall, securing his place in the final. The top three athletes from each heat, along with the next two fastest hurdlers, advanced to the final, which will be held later on Monday.

England’s Samuel Bennett topped the heat and the overall standings with a time of 13.20 seconds. Shirse holds the national record in the event after clocking 13.27 seconds at the Indian Athletics Series 9 in Ludhiana last month and would hope to finish on the podium to extend the country’s medal tally. Meanwhile, former world youth champion Sachin Siwach advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s 60kg boxing event at the Commonwealth Games after defeating England’s William Hewitt 4-1 in a split decision in the Round of 16 on Monday. The 26-year-old Indian produced a composed performance and won four of the five judges’ scorecards. Judges 1, 2, 3 and 5 awarded Siwach a 29-27 victory, while Judge 4 scored the bout 29-27 in Hewitt’s favour.

Siwach maintained a steady flow of scoring throughout the three-round contest. He won the opening two rounds on four judges’ cards before securing the overall verdict, despite one judge favouring Hewitt. The Indian also sealed the victory despite being deducted a point in the final round. The win leaves Siwach one victory away from securing a Commonwealth Games medal. He will face Botswana’s Treasure Moremi in the quarter-finals after Moremi defeated Lesotho’s Toka Litabe 3-2 in another split decision in the Round of 16. Earlier, Gurindervir Singh endured a disappointing Commonwealth Games outing, finishing 28th overall in the 100m heats with a 10.39-second effort, well below his national-record 10.09 seconds. Two-time Olympian Sajan Prakash, meanwhile, advanced to the men’s 200m butterfly final after finishing second in his heat in 1:58.59.
