(PTI File) Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s detention conditions have come under renewed international scrutiny after United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture Dr. Alice Edwards raised concerns over his reported prolonged solitary confinement and treatment in custody. Edwards said the reported conditions of Khan’s imprisonment could amount to violations of the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (the Mandela Rules), particularly if he is being subjected to extended isolation, constant surveillance, and limited meaningful human contact.
According to reports, Khan has been held under strict detention conditions at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where concerns have been raised over 24-hour monitoring, restrictions on family and legal access, limited opportunities for exercise, and inadequate social interaction. The UN expert emphasized that prolonged solitary confinement and psychological deprivation can have serious consequences for mental and physical health. The intervention follows international legal advocacy led by human rights lawyer Jared Genser, who has urged UN mechanisms to examine Khan’s treatment and called on Pakistani authorities to ensure compliance with international human rights obligations. Edwards urged Pakistan to ensure that Khan is treated with dignity and humanity, stressing that all detainees, regardless of the charges they face, are entitled to protections under international law.

Khan has remained in custody since his arrest in August 2023 and is serving multiple prison sentences following a series of corruption-related convictions. He and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have faced numerous legal proceedings since Khan’s removal from office in April 2022, including a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust case and a 17-year sentence handed down in December 2025 in the Toshakhana state-gift case. Both have consistently denied all allegations, maintaining that the cases are politically motivated. The UN expert’s remarks add to growing international attention on Khan’s detention, with rights advocates calling for transparent judicial processes and detention conditions consistent with global human rights standards.
