The bank statement reads, “The Bank has robust information security protocols in place. The incident involved compromise of an employee’s email account, resulting in unauthorised access to certain data. The matter was promptly identified, and immediate containment measures were implemented. The Bank’s core banking systems were not accessed and continue to remain secure. A comprehensive forensic investigation has been initiated, and the Bank is working closely with the relevant authorities in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements." Bank of Baroda has launched a forensic investigation after customer data and internal documents were reportedly leaked on the dark web, raising fresh concerns over cybersecurity in the banking sector.
Reports claimed that sensitive personal and corporate banking information, including Aadhaar numbers, customer names, savings and current account records, loan data, net banking user details, NRI and corporate banking service records, customer support material, and branch and ATM-related records from multiple branches across India had been compromised. The reports also claimed that nearly 1TB of sensitive data had been released on the dark web. What the leaked data reportedly contains According to the reports, the leaked files also include branch audit records, loan appraisal documents, internal communications, vigilance investigation papers, bobWorld audit reports and customer application forms from branches across the country. It was not immediately clear how many customers had been affected. Bank says core banking systems remain secure In a statement issued on Monday, the Mumbai-based lender said it had initiated a forensic investigation and was working with the relevant authorities after taking initial containment measures. The bank said the breach occurred through a compromised employee email account, resulting in “unauthorised access to certain data".
It, however, said its core banking systems had not been accessed. “The bank’s core banking systems were not accessed and continue to remain secure," the statement said. Data surfaced on dark web The reported breach comes at a time of growing concern over cyber threats targeting financial institutions and large companies that hold vast amounts of customer and business data. According to Srikanth, the data appeared on a dark web site on Saturday night and was as a cache containing more than 700 gigabytes of information, based on metadata analysis of the site. The incident follows a series of recent cyber-related disclosures. In June, a cyberattack on Apple supplier Tata Electronics resulted in component design and specification documents linked to Apple and Tesla being leaked on the dark web. Earlier this month, ransomware group World Leaks posted files on the dark web related to India’s largest nuclear plant.
