A viral video from Siwan, Bihar, showing a police constable using an assault rifle during a student agitation, has sparked intense political controversy and administrative action. The District Magistrate of Siwan, Vivek Ranjan, clarified that the constable had no orders to open fire, carry the weapon in public, or fire in the air, explaining that he got caught up in the commotion while on his way elsewhere.
The constable, identified as Abhishek Patel, has been suspended, and a departmental inquiry has been initiated. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi charged the government, alleging that pellet guns and bullets were being directly used against student protesters. Political leaders and opposition figures condemned the action, questioning how weapons like AK-47 assault rifles could be deployed against agitating students.
Meanwhile, local authorities across Bihar are registering FIRs and identifying individuals involved in violence and vandalism during the statewide protests.
