A 26-year-old Indian-origin woman was shot dead in what Toronto Police described as a “targeted attack" in Canada’s largest city, with a 37-year-old man arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The victim, Navneet Kaur, was found with a gunshot wound near Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard after police responded to reports of a shooting.
Despite life-saving efforts by emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police arrested Sharanjit Singh, 37, of Brampton in connection with the killing. He has been charged with first-degree murder and failure to comply with an undertaking. According to Toronto Police, the shooting occurred outdoors in a public area and not at a residence. Duty Inspector Scott Bradbury said officers immediately launched a large-scale search involving drones and K9 units after the suspect was seen fleeing the scene. An eyewitness told CBC News they were having coffee outside when they saw Navneet Kaur walking east along Humberwood Boulevard. A man was seen following her before calling out to her.
After a brief interaction, Navneet Kaur turned around and the man allegedly shot her once before fleeing with a firearm. The witness said the pair did not appear to be arguing before the shooting. The suspect was later tracked down and taken into custody. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Toronto Police said investigators believe the killing was a “targeted attack" and confirmed there are no outstanding suspects. Authorities did not disclose a possible motive for the shooting, saying the investigation remains ongoing. Police appealed to anyone with information, surveillance footage or dashcam video from the area around the time of the incident to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers as the homicide unit continues its investigation.
