(Photos: LinkedIn/Social Media) A third-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati died after allegedly falling from a building on the institute’s campus, with police launching an investigation and not ruling out the possibility of suicide. The incident took place at around 2.30 pm on Sunday, July 26. The deceased was identified as Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year student of the Computer Science and Engineering department who hailed from Odisha and resided at the Brahmaputra Hostel on the IIT Guwahati campus.
According to the police, Ritesh Singh allegedly fell from the fifth floor of the institute’s academic complex. His body was recovered from the spot and sent for post-mortem examination. Officials said the exact cause of death will be known only after the autopsy report is received and the investigation is completed. Meanwhile, the Kamrup Police have registered a case and launched a detailed probe into the incident. Investigators said they were examining all possible circumstances surrounding the death and have not reached any conclusion. Police also said they have not ruled out the possibility of suicide, while statements of students and institute officials were being recorded as part of the investigation. IIT Guwahati Reacts To The Death Of Third-Year Student On Campus In a statement issued on Monday, IIT Guwahati said it was fully cooperating with the police. “The Institute is cooperating fully with the police, who are investigating the matter, and we are awaiting their findings before we share any further information on this matter," the institute said.
The institute added that Ritesh Singh’s parents were on their way to the campus and that IIT Guwahati was in close contact with the family, extending all necessary support during the difficult time. Expressing grief over the student’s death, IIT Guwahati Director Professor Devendra Jalihal described the incident as a profound loss for the institute and conveyed his condolences to the student’s family in a message to the campus community, according to local media reports. The institute also appealed to the public to refrain from speculation until the facts are established. According to sources cited by IANS, Ritesh Singh was regarded as a bright student with an excellent academic record and had recently secured an internship with global investment banking firm Goldman Sachs.
