(PTI File) Alleging close ties between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and extremist organisations such as Jamaat-e-Islami, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari warned that those responsible for fomenting lawlessness and political violence would face stringent action under the state’s newly enacted Anti-Goonda Act. Suvendu Adhikari claimed that Islamic fundamentalists, “possibly backed by foreign forces", were behind the violence that erupted during Friday’s protest rally over the alleged NEET paper leak in Kolkata.

He alleged that the Trinamool Congress had links with such elements, while asserting that genuine students protesting the issue had no role in the clashes. “There is no connection between these people and the movement. They are not students. They are Jamaati (Islamic) fundamentalists. Probe agencies will determine whether foreign forces backed them," Suvendu Adhikari said. He claimed that Left student organisations had joined the protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and alleged that “Islamic fundamentalist groups" exploited the agitation to trigger violence. Actual NEET protesters had condemned the attacks on police personnel and journalists through social media, he said. Escalating his attack on the Trinamool Congress, Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the previous government repeatedly failed to act against attacks on journalists during the 2022 municipal elections, the 2023 panchayat polls and the 2024 protests following the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

He said the state government ensured that injured journalists received medical care and encouraged them to file police complaints after Friday’s violence. “Fourteen persons involved in the violence have been arrested after verifying video footage of the incident," he said. The chief minister further alleged that some protesters insulted the national flag by holding it upside down, kicked photographs of the Prime Minister and the chief minister and raised anti-national slogans during the demonstration. Warning of tough action, Suvendu Adhikari said those responsible would be prosecuted under the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026, commonly referred to as the Anti-Goonda Act.
