The Delhi government has appointed BJP leader Lata Gupta as chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, filling a post that had remained vacant for more than two years. It has also reconstituted the Delhi Minorities Commission, with Nirmal Jain named its chairperson, the Chief Minister's Office said on Sunday. Shyam Bala, Malti Verma, Lata Sodhi, Sanrika Sharma Jha and Renu Bhalla have been appointed members of the Delhi Commission for Women, while Kuldeep Singh and Mohammad Haroon have been named members of the minorities panel.

The Chief Minister's Office said the commission plays a crucial role in ensuring women's safety, dignity, protection of rights and empowerment. It said the appointments would give fresh momentum to the commission's functioning and make the delivery of justice, protection and assistance to women more effective. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the reconstitution of the two commissions was aimed at strengthening the protection of women's rights, promoting their empowerment and ensuring the welfare of minority communities, along with safeguarding their constitutional rights.

She added the Delhi Commission for Women and the Delhi Minorities Commission were not merely statutory bodies, but important platforms that would strengthen public trust and amplify the voices of weaker and disadvantaged sections of society. Expressing confidence in the newly appointed chairpersons and members, the chief minister said they would discharge their responsibilities with fairness, sensitivity and transparency, while contributing to the prompt and effective resolution of issues concerning public interest. She said the DCW would play an effective role in protecting women's rights, ensuring speedy redressal of grievances and helping women secure justice, while the Delhi Minorities Commission would work to safeguard the interests of minority communities and promote their welfare and inclusive development.

Later in the day, the chairpersons and members of both commissions met Chief Minister Gupta after their appointments, capping the reconstitution of the two bodies. Ends
