The Congress MP jumped into a debate over “boomers” on WhatsApp after his son, American journalist Ishaan Tharoor, suggested that India should ban the older generation from the messaging platform before imposing restrictions on young children using social media. But India needs to ban Boomers on WhatsApp first before it does anything else,” Ishaan wrote on X.
The post may have been aimed at the generation that forwards everything from good morning messages to dubious political claims on WhatsApp. But it also gave his father the perfect opening. Tharoor replied with a lesson in Indian demography - and a punchline aimed directly at his son. “Given our reproductive patterns, my son, unlike in the West, every generation of Indians, including yours, qualifies as [baby] Boomers!” he wrote. In other words, Ishaan's generation may not be able to escape the “boomer” label quite so easily. IT STARTED WITH A DEBATE OVER CHILDREN AND SOCIAL MEDIA The exchange began after Vembu argued that India should keep young children away from social media altogether. “India should ban social media for young children too.
I believe young children should read physical books, play in the dirt under the sun and stay away from social media!” he wrote. Ishaan agreed with the broader concern about children and social media, but had a different priority. Before young children were kept off social media, he suggested, India should first deal with “boomers” on WhatsApp. That was when Tharoor entered the conversation. Rather than argue about WhatsApp forwards, screen time or social media regulation, the Congress MP took the conversation somewhere only Shashi Tharoor could - towards India's reproductive patterns. In India, social media has not merely become a place where young people consume content. It has also become a place where they organise. The Cockroach Janta Party, founded by Abhijit Dipke through an Instagram account on May 16, began as a satirical social media initiative. It soon grew into a youth movement over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in competitive examinations. The agitation later expanded, with activist Sonam Wangchuk joining the protest and beginning a hunger strike. What followed was a sustained movement led largely by young people who used reels, memes, slogans and social media posts to take their demands to the streets.
