(Photo: X) The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday expelled two MLAs – Ritabrata Bandyopadhyay and Sandipan Saha – for alleged anti-party activities. A letter informing the Speaker about the decision has also been submitted. The party accused the MLAs of repeatedly failing to attend meetings and getting involved in anti-party activities. “It has also been observed that you have engaged in activities and made statements that are prejudicial to the interests of AITC," the TMC said in its notices. The party said that the two legislators would cease to hold any position, responsibility or privilege associated with the Trinamool Congress from the date of issuance of the notices.
Ritabrata, a former Rajya Sabha MP who joined TMC in 2017 after switching from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), was elected as the MLA from the Uluberia Purba constituency. He had defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rudra Prasad Banerjee by a margin of over 11,800 votes. Sandipan Saha, son of former TMC MLA Swarna Kamal Saha, defeated BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal by more than 34,000 votes in Entally. “In this party, anyone who speaks of morality will be deemed to be engaging in anti-party activity, simply because the party itself does not engage in any moral conduct… If, today, we have been suspended from the party for the sake of upholding morality, we are actually quite pleased," Sandipan Saha told news agency ANI. Why Were The TMC MLAs Expelled? The two MLAs were expelled from the TMC after they complained to the Assembly speaker that they had not signed the proposal letter proposing the name of the Leader of Opposition. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday made a startling revelation, claiming that a letter proposing the name of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition did not bear their handwriting or signature.
The matter was referred to the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, and a formal complaint was filed. The Chief Minister further claimed that three more TMC MLAs have already stated that the signatures appearing on the purported resolution letter are not theirs. The West Bengal CID had served a notice to TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the ‘fake signature’ probe. Both Sandipan and Ritabrata were among the 60 MLAs who failed to attend a key meeting called by the TMC leadership. Sandipan defended his decision not to attend, saying the meeting at Mamata Banerjee’s residence was called without following appropriate procedures and questioned TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee over the ‘fake signature’ probe. “A meeting has been held before. It included a resolution on who would be the party leader, deputy leader, and chief whip. Now, despite being in power for 15 years, this resolution was submitted to the Assembly without following the procedures. Then, it was scrutinised because the process wasn’t followed as per protocol. Now, the subjudice has been passed. Now, another meeting has been called. Was this meeting called after reviewing the procedures?… That’s why I felt that there was no point in attending this meeting," he said.
Only around 20 MLAs reportedly reached the venue, prompting the party leadership to postpone the gathering for the time being. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the absence of legislators was linked to the “sudden and emergent ground situation" following the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur on May 30.
