The department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, chaired by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, on Monday reviewed issues related to higher education, examination reforms and the upcoming NEET re-examination during the first day of its two-day meeting. Among the key agenda items before the committee were the adoption of its 381st Report on Action Taken by the Government on the recommendations contained in the 364th Report on Demands for Grants (2025-26) of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, as well as discussions on the use of traditional pen-and-paper examinations versus Computer-Based Testing (CBT).
The committee also exchanged views on issues concerning NEET and the functioning of the Testing Agency (NTA). During the meeting, committee chairman Singh expressed confidence in the government’s efforts to ensure a fair examination process. According to sources, he stated that the committee must trust Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the system and believes that no injustice will be done to students. Sources said an informal interaction among members took place before the formal proceedings began. During the discussion, some ruling party members reportedly questioned the timing of such deliberations while investigations into the NEET controversy were still underway and raised concerns about the alleged politicisation of the issue. Singh is understood to have responded that the committee’s discussions were not politically motivated but were aimed at addressing the concerns being voiced by students and parents across the country. He also wished the Education Ministry and officials success in their preparations for the NEET re-examination scheduled for June 21.
Members sought details from officials on measures being adopted to ensure a fool-proof examination process. Sources say officials informed the panel that extensive efforts were being undertaken to eliminate loopholes, including greater reliance on in-house paper setters, teachers and professors to strengthen the system. The committee also urged authorities to adopt stringent and innovative safeguards ahead of the June 21 examination and emphasised the need for close coordination between the education ministry and the health ministry to ensure the smooth conduct of the test, the sources said. Several members highlighted the importance of restoring confidence among students ahead of the re-examination. Suggestions included a public message from the prime minister or the Union education minister, or an open letter to students reassuring them that the government stands with them during the process, said sources. The discussions also focused on long-term reforms in the examination ecosystem. Members suggested encouraging CBT-focused hackathons and supporting examination-related start-ups to improve testing systems and strengthen institutional capacity in the future, according to sources.
Among those present at the meeting were BJP MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ghanshyam Tiwari, Bansuri Swaraj and Sambit Patra. Opposition members attending the meeting included DMK MP T Sumathy, Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai and Congress MP Dean Kuriakose.
