The Bihar bandh over the NEET paper leak has landed Jan Shakti Janata Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav in legal trouble, with him facing one of the most serious charges in connection with the violence during the protests in Patna. Tej Pratap has been booked under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with attempt to murder. If convicted, the charge carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison and a fine. In cases where grievous hurt is caused, the punishment can extend to life imprisonment.
Read Full Story A Patna court on Sunday sent Tej Pratap to 14 days of judicial custody, following which he was lodged in Beur Central Jail. Apart from the attempt to murder charge, the FIR includes provisions related to assault on public servants, abetment, criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, promoting enmity and disobedience of lawful orders. It also includes charges related to public disorder, causing hurt to public servants, alleged acts affecting religious sentiments and damage to public property. BIHAR BANDH VIOLENCE The case stems from the Bihar bandh called over the NEET paper leak, the demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and action against police personnel over the handling of student protests.
The protest near Gandhi Maidan in Patna, which started as a demonstration by students and political workers, later turned violent, with police alleging clashes and stone-pelting. Several police personnel were injured during the confrontation. Police arrested dozens of protesters and registered FIRs against hundreds of named and unnamed individuals. But the biggest turn came hours after Tej Pratap was arrested from a shopping mall in Patna on Saturday evening, with sources saying the action followed a review of CCTV footage from the protest site. Police have alleged that the footage showed Tej Pratap inciting protesters during the demonstration.
His lawyer, however, has questioned the police action and said a bail application will be filed. The Bihar agitation formed part of a wider nationwide protest over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, which ended with the resignation of Pradhan on July 25. Ends
