(ANI) With cyber fraud emerging as one of the biggest challenges before law enforcement agencies, Uttar Pradesh’s newly appointed permanent DGP Rajeev Krishna on Monday announced that the state police would increasingly use artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology to tackle digital crimes. Addressing his first press conference after taking charge as the state’s full-time police chief, he outlined 10 priority areas that will guide policing in the coming years. The 1991-batch IPS officer said UP Police has already trained more than 62,000 personnel in cybercrime investigation and prevention—the highest number among states—and the next phase will focus on advanced cyber policing skills. He also announced plans to establish a centrally managed advanced cyber security centre at the Police Headquarters to strengthen the state’s capability against online frauds and cyber attacks. Presenting what he described as both a roadmap and a report card, Rajeev Krishna highlighted key achievements recorded during his one year as acting DGP. He said crimes against women have declined by 33 per cent, attributing the improvement to focused interventions and faster police response. To further strengthen women’s safety, the police department is setting up Women Power Centres in all police stations to ensure prompt action in cases involving women. Traffic management and road safety also feature prominently in the new DGP’s agenda. According to Krishna, 573 crash control teams were constituted across the state to identify accident-prone stretches and improve emergency response.
Their efforts helped reduce road accidents by 7.5 per cent and fatalities by 11.5 per cent in identified districts. The state police now plans to replicate the initiative across all police stations. Reiterating the Yogi Adityanath government’s policy of zero tolerance towards crime, Krishna said stringent action against criminals would continue without exception. Referring to the recent murder of a hotel businessman’s son in Ghazipur, he termed the incident “serious" and assured that strict action was being taken against those involved. He added that if any police personnel were found negligent in the case, they too would face tough disciplinary action. The press conference came a day after the Uttar Pradesh government formally appointed Rajeev Krishna as the state’s first full-time Director General of Police in four years, ending a prolonged phase during which the police force was headed by a succession of acting chiefs. The appointment was notified through an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad on Sunday. Soon after the announcement, Krishna met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow, where the two discussed key law-and-order and policing challenges facing the state. Under the guidelines of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and directions of the Supreme Court, a full-time DGP is entitled to a minimum tenure of two years. His elevation is expected to bring continuity and stability to the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Police, the country’s largest police force. The appointment followed a UPSC selection process in which the Uttar Pradesh government had forwarded the names of 19 senior IPS officers. Following a meeting in New Delhi on May 26, the UPSC shortlisted three officers—Renuka Mishra, Piyush Anand and Rajeev Krishna—and forwarded the panel to the state government.
The Yogi government eventually selected Krishna for the top post. A 1991-batch IPS officer, Rajeev Krishna has served in a range of key field and administrative assignments across Uttar Pradesh during a distinguished career spanning more than three decades. Born on June 26, 1969, and originally from Noida, he began his career as a trainee IPS officer in Allahabad, now Prayagraj. Over the years, he served as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Bareilly, Kanpur and Aligarh before getting his first district posting as Superintendent of Police in Firozabad in March 1997. He subsequently headed several important districts, including Etawah, Mathura, Fatehgarh, Bulandshahr, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Agra, Lucknow and Bareilly. During the BSP government led by Mayawati, when the state experimented with appointing Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) instead of Senior Superintendents of Police in major districts, Rajeev Krishna was posted as DIG of Lucknow. He later served as Inspector General of Meerut Range and went on central deputation in 2012. Upon returning to Uttar Pradesh in September 2017, he was first posted at the Police Academy in Moradabad. In February 2018, he was appointed Additional Director General (ADG) of the Lucknow Zone and later served for nearly two-and-a-half years as ADG of the Agra Zone. His extensive experience in handling law and order, crime control and policing in some of the state’s most sensitive districts is believed to have strengthened his candidature for the top post. Rajeev Krishna comes from a family with a strong presence in civil services. His wife, Meenakshi Singh, is an IRS officer serving as Deputy Secretary in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). His brother-in-law, Rajeshwar Singh, a former IPS officer and current BJP MLA from Sarojininagar, is married to Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner Lakshmi Singh.
His father-in-law also retired from the police service as a DIG. The post of permanent DGP had effectively remained vacant since May 2022, when the Yogi government removed then police chief Mukul Goel. Thereafter, Uttar Pradesh saw a succession of acting DGPs, including D.S. Chauhan, R.K. Vishwakarma, Vijay Kumar and Prashant Kumar. Following Prashant Kumar’s retirement on May 31, 2025, Rajeev Krishna was appointed acting DGP from June 1, 2025. With a minimum assured tenure of two years and service remaining until 2029, Rajeev Krishna is expected to provide rare continuity to Uttar Pradesh Police leadership at a time when the state is preparing for the politically significant 2027 Assembly elections.
