Nine to ten cycles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) administered over nearly 30 minutes revived former BRS MLA Peddi Sudarshan Reddy after he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest moments after arriving at a private hospital in Telangana’s Hanumakonda district with severe breathlessness, according to the cardiologist who led the resuscitation effort. Speaking to The Hindu, Dr. Mamatha Reddy, cardiologist at Rohini Superspeciality Hospital, said Mr. Sudarshan Reddy had been brought to the emergency department with severe shortness of breath and was unable to speak because of the severity of his condition.
“I was called for a cardiology emergency. By the time I reached the casualty, the emergency team had already intubated him and initiated CPR. His pulse and blood pressure were not recordable,” she said. The medical team continued CPR for nearly 30 minutes, administering around nine to ten cycles before restoring spontaneous circulation. “We did not want to give up because he had collapsed right in front of us.
He had just been brought to the hospital when he suffered the cardiac arrest,” Dr. Reddy recalled. Following the successful resuscitation, the patient was shifted to the cardiac catheterisation laboratory to determine the cause of the cardiac arrest. Coronary angiography revealed that his coronary arteries were normal, ruling out a heart attack. Doctors subsequently diagnosed him with acute pulmonary thromboembolism, a condition in which a blood clot blocks the pulmonary artery carrying blood from the heart to the lungs.
She said the incident highlighted the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for persistent or severe breathlessness.
