Fungal-contaminated vegetables, hygiene violations flagged at Hyderabad’s Hotel Sweekar

Multiple food safety and hygiene violations, including fungal-contaminated vegetables, rotten produce, poor sanitation and improper food storage, were found during an inspection at Sweekar Hotel at Kachiguda X Roads in Hyderabad by the Telangana food safety department on Sunday (July 26). The inspection revealed fungal-contaminated cabbage, lemons affected by citrus canker and rotten tomatoes in the kitchen.
They also observed that boiled potatoes were being used without proper cleaning and peeling. The kitchen premises were found to be unhygienic, with poor sanitation and a housefly infestation. The inspection further revealed that prepared food was stored uncovered and without labels inside refrigerators. Raw vegetables were stored alongside semi-prepared food, including boiled noodles, increasing the risk of cross-contamination.
Officials also noted that the establishment did not have any Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC)-trained personnel. Mandatory records related to employee health, pest control, water analysis and disposal of used cooking oil were also not maintained. During the inspection, officials seized a 700 gm packet of New Classic Hakka Noodles after finding that the product did not carry a batch number or nutritional information, in violation of the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations.
The food safety department said necessary action has been initiated against the establishment under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
