Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Ponguru Narayana has been at the forefront of making this initiative a reality. The ambitious plan to distribute 10,000 bicycles to girls studying in 23 State-run high schools in his Nellore constituency and hailing from economically disadvantaged families is intended to save money on transportation needs.
In fact, the Minister decided to undertake the ₹6-crore project at his own expense after learning that some students had to walk up to 40 minutes to reach school on time. Of the total 10,000 bicycles, 7,000 are parked at the Venkatagiri Rajah (VR) High School in Nellore, and will be distributed at a grand function scheduled to be held on July 27 (Monday).
The remaining 3,000 will be distributed by Sankranti festival. Narayana holds VR High School close to his heart, as it is his alma mater. It may be recalled that he had developed the infrastructure using his own funds last year and had the modernised campus inaugurated by Minister for Education Nara Lokesh. Ahead of the distribution programme, Mr. Narayana’s daughter and Narayana Education Group director Ponguru Sharani, visited the campus and inspected the arrangements on Sunday.
Interacting with the students and teachers, she recalled that it was her father’s vision to introduce free IIT foundation and Olympiad coaching for the students of VR High School. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Y.O. Nandan also accompanied her during the visit.
