Following 36 days of intense protests by the Combined Student-Youth Front (CJP) at Jantar Mantar, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, leading to the end of the demonstrations. Pralhad Joshi has taken charge as the new Education Minister. The protest concluded as the government accepted all CJP demands, including the withdrawal of FIRs against protesters and compensation for the families of students who died by suicide due to exam controversies.
Attention now shifts to Parliament, where the government is set to introduce the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. The proposed legislation introduces stricter measures against exam malpractices, including hiking minimum jail terms from three to five years, and maximum terms up to ten years. Fines for individuals have been raised to 50 lakh rupees, while penalties for organized exam mafias reach up to 10 crore rupees.
Additionally, the bill mandates a two-month deadline for probe agencies to complete investigations, along with provisions for a special task force and fast-track courts.
