Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following a 36-day protest led by students and the CJP at Jantar Mantar over paper leak controversies. Pralhad Joshi has taken charge as the new Education Minister. The CJP called off its protest after the government accepted all its demands, including the withdrawal of FIRs against protesters and compensation for families of students who died by suicide linked to exam controversies.
Attention now shifts to Parliament, where the government is set to introduce the Public Examinations Prevention of Unfair Means Amendment Bill 2026 in the Lok Sabha. The proposed legislation seeks to strengthen the 2024 anti-paper leak law by increasing the minimum jail term from three to five years, with maximum imprisonment extended to 10 years. Fines for individuals have been raised to 50 lakh rupees, while organized exam mafias face fines of up to 10 crore rupees.
Additionally, probe agencies face a two-month deadline, along with provisions for a special task force and fast-track courts.
