The visit comes at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia, with American forces continuing military strikes on Iranian positions after diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran broke down. Trump made the announcement during his address at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, confirming that Netanyahu would be visiting Washington in the coming days.
The upcoming meeting follows a phone conversation between the two leaders several weeks ago, during which Netanyahu congratulated Trump on the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and praised the strong relationship between the two countries. Netanyahu’s visit comes amid renewed tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran after a ceasefire linked to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Washington and Tehran collapsed. Israel had opposed the agreement from the beginning, while its continued military operations in Lebanon complicated diplomatic efforts in the region. At the same time, the Trump administration has been holding separate talks with Israel and Lebanon in an attempt to end cross-border hostilities. The negotiations have excluded Hezbollah, with both sides agreeing in principle that Israeli-held areas in southern Lebanon would eventually be handed over to the Lebanese armed forces.
However, there has been little progress since March. During a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun earlier this week, Trump did not provide any timeline for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the occupied areas. Netanyahu’s visit also comes as Israel continues its military campaign in Gaza. Although a US-brokered ceasefire was announced last October, Israeli forces have continued to issue evacuation orders and carry out regular strikes across the enclave.
