Strengthening his argument in favour of lowering the age to contest, Reddy cited former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's decision to reduce the voting age from 21 to 18 through the 61st Constitutional Amendment and PV Narasimha Rao's 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, which enabled 21-year-olds to contest local body elections.
He also referred to countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom and Singapore, where younger leaders are allowed to contest elections at an earlier age. In addition, the Chief Minister said that the Telangana government would convene a special session of the Assembly and Legislative Council in the first week of August to pass a resolution seeking the constitutional amendment.
