(AFP file photo) US President Donald Trump put plans for a major military offensive against Iran on hold as reports suggested concerns over dwindling US munitions supplies played a key role in the decision. Plans to escalate the military campaign were shelved partly because of shrinking stockpiles of Patriot missile interceptors and other defensive weapons, The New York Times reported. The development comes as the conflict between the United States and Iran approaches its fifth month after weeks of sustained US airstrikes.
CNN, citing an unidentified Pentagon source, also reported that US military operations against Iran were “on hold", despite Trump’s warning that Tehran could face attacks at a “much higher level" if diplomatic efforts fail. US Facing Shortage Of Munitions? The New York Times reported that the shortage of munitions was one of several factors influencing Trump’s decision. The US President is also said to be weighing the risk of the conflict spiralling into a broader regional war, straining relations with Gulf allies and triggering further disruptions to the global economy. According to CNN, Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine raised concerns about further escalation during a White House meeting on Friday.
General Caine reportedly told Trump that while the US military was capable of carrying out additional operations successfully, any escalation could have significant consequences. Trump indicated that he had not ruled out renewed military action but said diplomacy remained the preferred option. “We’re talking to them right now. I think they’re getting more and more serious," Trump said. He warned that Iran faced a choice between reaching an agreement with Washington or facing strikes “at a much higher level." According to Axios, the Pentagon had presented Trump with plans for a 14th consecutive night of airstrikes but the US President declined to authorise the operation, opting instead to pursue negotiations.
