Avyaan was playing with other children when he allegedly fell into the open pit. When Siwan Yadav returned home from work on Saturday evening, he noticed a crowd gathered near the park inside Greater Noida’s Kaladham Society. Moments later, he learnt that the child pulled out of a 15-foot-deep water-filled pit was his si year-old son, Avyaan Surya. Avyaan, who had been playing cricket with his friends, had fallen into the pit, allegedly dug by the Greater Noida Authority for boring work and left without adequate barricades or warning signs, according to residents. The child was rescued by residents and rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Speaking to NDTV outside the mortuary, a grief-stricken Siwan Yadav said his son had lost his life because of the authorities’ negligence. “It’s unfair that his life was lost because of the negligence of the authorities," he said, adding, “He hadn’t seen the world. He was fond of playing outside like all the other children. Whenever I close my eyes, his face comes in front of me. We’re inconsolable at this point." Eyewitness Pranjal Rajput said the incident took place around 7 pm. “A boy came running to me while I was washing my car, screaming that a child had fallen inside the pit," he said. Pranjal Rajput said a security guard immediately jumped into the pit, followed by three to four residents, who searched underwater for several minutes before locating Avyaan. “We took him out of the pit and tried our best to revive him.

We rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead," he said. Residents alleged that they were unaware of the deep pit and accused the Greater Noida Authority of gross negligence. “It is a matter of grave negligence," Pranjal Rajput said. The tragedy reignited concerns over public safety in Noida and Greater Noida. Residents pointed to the death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who drowned in January after his car plunged into a waterlogged pit near a construction site, saying authorities had promised to secure open pits after that incident. Greater Noida Authority General Manager A.K. Singh acknowledged lapses, saying the contractor had begun work without informing senior officials. “The contractor should have placed proper barricades, but he just used two bamboo barricades that were not sufficient. It is grave negligence," he said, adding that the tube well had originally been approved for a different location.
