According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the vessels were intercepted while allegedly trying to enter or leave Iranian ports in violation of the blockade. US forces said the ships were either redirected, boarded for compliance checks or otherwise prevented from proceeding.
“The US naval blockade against Iran remains in full effect," US Central Command said in a statement on X. “As of July 25, CENTCOM has redirected 12 commercial vessels trying to run the blockade, disabled 2 that didn’t comply, and boarded 2 to ensure total compliance," it continued. The latest development marks a further escalation in the maritime standoff around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping lane. The US military has been enforcing the blockade since April after the breakdown of diplomatic efforts with Iran, saying commercial traffic to and from non-Iranian ports remains unaffected while vessels linked to Iranian ports are subject to inspection and interdiction. CENTCOM has previously said US forces have boarded commercial vessels to verify compliance with the blockade and, in some cases, disabled ships that ignored repeated warnings.
The military maintains that these actions are intended to enforce the blockade and ensure maritime security. The enforcement comes as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. Shipping through the region has been severely disrupted, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a focal point of the confrontation due to its importance for global energy supplies. US Halts Nightly Strikes On Iran The United States has reportedly halted its strikes on Iran after nearly two weeks of military operations, even as clashes involving Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia intensified, raising fresh questions about US President Donald Trump’s strategy in the conflict. On Saturday, the Houthis claimed they had launched missiles and drones targeting facilities linked to Saudi oil giant Aramco in the Red Sea port cities of Jizan and Yanbu.
