The victim was identified as Avyaan Surya, son of Siwan Yadav, Vice Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya.
According to residents, the nearly 15-foot-deep pit had been dug by the Greater Noida Authority for boring work and was left uncovered after filling up with rainwater. Locals alleged there were no barricades or warning signs around the site. Avyaan was playing with other children when he allegedly fell into the open pit. Residents rushed to rescue him and took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident triggered protests from residents, who blamed the Greater Noida Authority for failing to secure the excavation despite repeated concerns over open pits in the city.
Residents also recalled the death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who drowned after his car plunged into a waterlogged pit near a construction site in Noida on the intervening night of January 16 and 17. They alleged that despite assurances from the authority to secure such hazardous sites, little had changed. Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ashutosh Gupta, who visited the spot, said preliminary findings suggested there was no barricading around the pit. He said legal action would be taken against the contractor responsible if negligence is established. Police and administrative officials are investigating the incident.
