Rapid Read Gabriel Langton fell while working on the horizontal bars (PA) The men’s team gymnastics final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games was brought to a standstill on Friday after England’s Gabriel Langton suffered a frightening fall from the high bar, leaving athletes and spectators in shock. The 19-year-old lost his grip while attempting to catch the horizontal bar during his routine and plunged headfirst from a height of around three metres, landing heavily on his head and neck. Medical personnel rushed onto the competition floor within seconds. Nine members of the medical team treated Langton for several minutes before carefully placing him in a neck brace and carrying him away on a stretcher.

Team officials later confirmed he was also speaking with doctors after being admitted to hospital. Competition Paused As Medics Respond The dramatic incident halted proceedings for around 20 minutes as athletes from the remaining teams looked on anxiously. Once Langton had been safely evacuated, gymnasts were offered an additional warm-up before competition resumed. Team England later thanked the medical staff for their swift response. “We are grateful to the medical teams who responded immediately to provide assistance," the team said in a statement. “He has been taken to hospital, and we will share more information when it is available." Teammates Relieved After Positive Update The accident cast a shadow over the remainder of the final, with England eventually settling for silver behind Canada, who claimed their first Commonwealth men’s team title in two decades.
Australia completed the podium with bronze, their first medal in the event since winning gold at the 2010 Delhi Games. England teammate Luke Whitehouse admitted it was difficult to regain focus after witnessing the fall. “When something like that happens, you’ve just got to forget about it and reset. I just had to focus on my routine one skill at a time," he said. Whitehouse also offered a reassuring update on Langton’s condition. “From what we’ve heard, he’s doing OK. Gymnastics is such a dangerous sport and things like this remind us of that. It’s one of those things you have to put out of your mind."
