Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi following 49 days of widespread student protests and nationwide agitations over the NEET paper leak controversy. Taking moral responsibility, Pradhan stated his decision was intended to ensure students' futures are not trapped in prolonged political conflicts or destroyed by the exam mafia. Following the acceptance of his resignation, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi was assigned additional charge of the Education Ministry.
In response to the crisis, the central government is set to introduce the Public Examination Prevention of Unfair Means Amendment Bill 2026 in Parliament, presented by Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh. The legislation proposes raising maximum jail terms from five to 10 years and increasing fines from 10 lakh to 50 lakh rupees. Opposition leaders described the resignation as a victory driven by student movements while demanding an official apology from the Prime Minister.
