Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's office will soon shift its operations from the historic Fort St George in Chennai to the modern Namakkal Kavignar Maalaigai because of paucity of space. The move will mark a break from a practice followed by Chief Ministers for nearly six decades. Except for a brief period between 2010 and 2011, Chief Ministers have functioned from Fort St George. During that period, then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had shifted the Secretariat to Omandurar estate near Chennai Port, about two km away, before it was moved back to the Fort after the AIADMK under J Jayalalithaa returned to power in May 2011.
Read Full Story According to an official, the Chief Minister's office will be moved to the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maalaigai. The Chief Minister will also have the option of using the present chamber for specific functions. Public Works Department officials are overseeing the transition and have started measuring the area to remove existing fixtures and set up the new office. The official said sections of some government departments, including Information and Tamil Development, Home, and Commercial Taxes, will also be relocated to the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maalaigai, which is close to the present office of the Chief Minister and the Legislative Assembly.
"The PWD has commenced the preliminary work and the transition is expected to be completed by mid-August," the official said. The existing large dining hall is likely to be converted into the Chief Minister's office, and it would offer a clear view of the Bay of Bengal. In sum, the Chief Minister's office is set to move from Fort St George to Namakkal Kavignar Maalaigai as officials prepare the new space and aim to complete the transition by mid-August.
