The incident occurred on Friday after play started, when the umpires spotted six Pakistan players on the field.

Under the rules of the five-a-side format, only five players are permitted on the turf. The umpires penalised Pakistan by sending off two players, leaving them with just three on the field. India capitalised on the numerical advantage to bag a convincing 7-3 victory over their arch-rivals. The management has conveyed that the misunderstanding happened due to some players not understanding the communication with the coaches. A similar lapse by the Pakistan team management proved costly during the 2022 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup in Jakarta, where Pakistan lost a qualification game to Japan after a late equaliser was ruled out because they had 12 players on the field instead of the allowed 11. The outcome resulted in Pakistan not qualifying for the 2023 FIH World Cup and head coach Khawaja Junaid being handed a life ban by the PHF. But the ban was lifted and Junaid is now in the main fold of the senior team management.
