As Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned after weeks of sustained protests over exam paper leaks, activist Sonam Wangchuk's wife hailed the country's youth, saying they showed the world what it truly meant to be a "Vishwaguru". The remark by Gitanjali Angmo was largely seen as a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose government is targeted by critics with the sarcastic use of the term 'Vishwaguru (teacher to the world)'. 'LIVED SANATAN DHARMA, NOT PREACHED IT' "If anyone has shown what it means for India to be a Vishwaguru, it is our Gen Z.
They have lived Sanatan Dharma, not preached it," Angmo, who led the charge against the government after Wangchuk's hospitalisation, tweeted. The pursuit of making India a "Vishwaguru" has been a cornerstone of the Modi government's vision. With her hard-hitting post, Angmo seemed to train her guns at the Prime Minister himself. Drawing a contrast with Gen Z movements in other parts of the world, the social entrepreneur and educationist said India's students had shown that it was possible to resist "injustice" without turning against the country. She seemed to refer to recent student-led protests in Nepal and Bangladesh, which resulted in bloodshed and regime changes. Last year, violent Gen Z protests in Nepal led to the fall of the KP Oli government. In 2024, Sheikh Hasina had to flee to India following a massive student uprising.
"Unlike many of their counterparts across the world, they have shown that you can stand firmly against injustice without burning your own country down," she said. The protests against Pradhan were largely peaceful. However, violence erupted on July 20 when the student protesters attempted to march to Parliament. Since then, the agitation only gained impetus, eventually forcing Pradhan to resign on Saturday. MESSAGE TO 'HINDU NATIONALIST PARTY' Before ending her post, Angmo sent a pointed message to the BJP, saying the party could learn from the students' conduct. "Maybe it's time the Hindu nationalist party learnt a thing or two from these young Indians about Hinduism, nationalism, and what it truly means to be a Vishwaguru," she tweeted. In a previous interview with India Today, Angmo had emphasised that the BJP was neither a true Hindu nor a true nationalist party.
