(News18/X) An improvised explosive device (IED) was allegedly found concealed inside an umbrella on a day the Hindu community was celebrating the return of Lord Jagannath through Rath Yatra in Bangladesh, raising concerns over a possible terror plot targeting the already persecuted community. The concealed device was allegedly fitted with a battery and an electrical circuit and was designed to be detonated remotely at the press of a button, according to preliminary details. The IED was reportedly hidden inside an umbrella and detected before it could be detonated, potentially averting a major tragedy during the Hindu religious ceremony.

The incident took place near Dhaka’s Motijheel Metro Rail station. However, the exact motive behind the incident is yet to be officially established. A 33-year-old passerby was reportedly injured by shrapnel during the operation to dispose of the explosive device. According to The Daily Star, “Sources in the Bomb Disposal Unit said the IED was fitted with an electrical circuit and a battery. It contained around 1 to 1.5kg of sulphur packed inside a metal pipe, along with numerous small iron balls." The recovery of the suspected IED, during a major Hindu religious event in the country, has triggered fresh concerns over the security of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, particularly amid continuing reports of attacks and intimidation against the community. Investigators are expected to examine who planted the device, how it was brought to the venue, and whether the incident was part of a larger plan to target the Rath Yatra or the Hindu community.

The incident also raises questions about the security arrangements in place during religious gatherings attended by members of Bangladesh’s minority Hindu population. In 2026, Bangladesh’s Hindu minority continues to face a disturbing pattern of killings, assaults, temple vandalism, land grabs, and intimidation, raising fresh concerns about the community’s safety and religious freedom. A report by the Bangladesh-based Sanatani Foundation recorded 111 incidents of minority persecution between February 17, when the BNP government took office, and April 30, including 24 murders and 16 cases of land grabbing. Separately, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council documented 133 communal incidents in the first three months of 2026, including 25 killings.
