A special POCSO court in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district on Friday sentenced a 30-year-old man to life in prison for raping his 18-month-old niece. He was found guilty under Section 65 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 5 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 2 lakh and directed that the entire amount be paid to the survivor, government counsel Pradeep Balyan said.

Read Full Story According to the prosecution, the court framed charges against the man on July 3 and pronounced the verdict on July 24, disposing of the case within 21 days. The offence was committed in March this year. The child was visiting her maternal granparents' home with her mother when the incident took place, the prosecution said.
During the visit, the man, a cousin of the young girl's mother, took the toddler away under the pretext of buying her biscuits and instead raped her. When the child returned home crying, her undergarments were found soaked in blood, Public Prosecutor Rajiv Sharma told the media. Subsequently, her mother lodged a complaint with the police. The police immediately registered a case and later that same day, they arrested the man following an encounter.
The swift verdict by the POCSO court in the matter is being attributed to a robust investigation, including gathering of scientific evidence, by the police.
