Her live-in partner, who is also an Indian national, has been arrested by police in connection with the murder.
The victim, identified as Damanpreet Kaur, belonged to Samrala and had travelled to Canada on a student visa. According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), officers reached a house in the Silverberry neighbourhood of southeast Edmonton on July 9 after receiving information about an unresponsive woman with suspicious injuries. Kaur was rushed to a hospital by emergency responders, where she later died on July 12 due to her injuries. An autopsy conducted on July 14 confirmed that Kaur died from strangulation, following which the medical examiner classified the case as a homicide, the EPS said.
Police arrested 22-year-old Ritish Kumar on July 22 and charged him with second-degree murder. Investigators said the case is being treated as an intimate partner homicide and added that no other suspects are being sought. Kaur’s family members told The New Indian Express that she had moved to Canada nearly five years ago after her parents reportedly took a loan to support her education and plans to settle abroad. A GoFundMe campaign started to bring Kaur’s body back to India has collected over $18,000, close to its $20,000 goal.
