The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the indigenous Project Kusha long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) shield from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on Friday, July 23. The test was conducted against a simulated high-speed, high-altitude electronic aerial target, which was successfully intercepted. Developed under Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Project Kusha missile defense system is designed to neutralize a wide array of aerial threats, including stealth fighter jets, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and large aircraft across various altitudes and range envelopes.
All core components of the system, including missiles, radars, and command and control centers, have been developed by DRDO laboratories in partnership with Indian industry. Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Anil Khosla and journalist Sandip Unnithan discussed the strategic significance of the test, highlighting its role in establishing an integrated, multi-layered air defense architecture alongside the S-400 systems and strengthening India's airspace denial capabilities.
