Authorities in southwestern France on Friday ordered the mass evacuation of the touristic Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast because of a large wildfire, forcing scores of people to escape by boat. Several firefighting units and rescue operations were also deployed in Arès to carry out evacuation procedures as wildfires engulfed several homes. "An evacuation on this scale has never happened before.
All we really hope is that the firefighters can quickly get it under control," said Laurent Moretti, a resident of Arès. More than 87 square kilometers (34 square miles) have already been burned by the blaze that has been raging since Wednesday. No casualties have been reported at this stage.
