(AFP file photo) Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on Friday used his first post on X to make a strong case for open-weight artificial intelligence (AI) models, saying they will play a key role in shaping the future of technology and global competitiveness. Sharing a letter signed by Nvidia along with Microsoft, Palantir, ServiceNow, Box and other technology companies, Huang wrote, “AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country." He said the world needs both advanced closed AI models and open models, adding that open models can strengthen safety, cybersecurity, innovation and technological independence. The letter compares the rise of open AI models with the growth of open-source software in the 1980s.
Huang argued that open-source software helped create the foundation of the modern internet by allowing developers to study, modify and improve technology. He argued that wider access will increase competition, reduce costs and allow organisations to choose models based on their specific needs.
Open models can also help companies avoid depending on a single AI provider, giving them more control over their data and technology. The Nvidia chief also addressed concerns about the risks of open AI models. He acknowledged that once models are released, developers may have limited control over how they are modified or used. However, he argued that openness can improve security by allowing more researchers and developers to examine models, identify weaknesses and create safeguards. “AI safety may depend on giving more people the ability to test and strengthen the models on which society relies," the letter said. Huang urged policymakers to support AI development by expanding access to computing resources, investing in shared datasets and tools, and avoiding restrictions that could slow innovation. “With the right choices, open weight AI can expand opportunity, strengthen competition, extend American technological leadership, mitigate risk, and ensure that the benefits of this extraordinary technology are shared broadly across our economy. That future is worth building, and the United States should lead in building it," the letter noted.
