Left: Kishore Kumar; Middle: Balaguru; Right: Joshua (Three arrested accused) An 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee was killed and a 17-year-old girl was injured after a dispute that began inside a bar ended in a fatal road incident in Chennai’s Koyambedu area in the early hours of Sunday. The deceased, identified as Yancy, suffered severe head injuries after being knocked off a motorcycle when a car allegedly rammed into the two-wheeler.
She died on the spot. The teenage girl travelling with her was injured and has been admitted to hospital for treatment. Police said the incident was linked to an altercation between two groups at a bar on Saturday night. According to the preliminary investigation, the argument escalated into a physical confrontation. Security personnel intervened and escorted both groups out of the premises. However, the dispute continued outside, and the groups were again asked to leave the area. Some of Yancy’s friends, who were travelling on motorcycles, allegedly threw stones at a car carrying members of the rival group, damaging the vehicle. Police said the car then followed the motorcycle carrying Yancy and the teenage girl.
During the chase, Yancy allegedly threw a stone at the vehicle. The car subsequently rammed the two-wheeler, causing both riders to fall. Yancy suffered fatal head injuries in the crash, while the other girl sustained injuries. Following the incident, Koyambedu police launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage from the area. Based on the footage and other evidence, police traced those involved and made arrests. Among those arrested is Balakumar alias Balaguru, who was inside the car at the time of the incident. During questioning, he allegedly told investigators that his friend, Suman Sakthivel, was driving the vehicle when it hit the motorcycle. Four people have been arrested in connection with the case so far.
