(PTI/File) The BJP’s Central Election Committee (CEC) met on Sunday at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by BJP president Nitin Nabin, Union ministers JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, the party’s national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and other members of the CEC. The meeting lasted nearly two hours and focused on elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states, along with bypolls to Rajya Sabha seats.
Discussions were also held on Legislative Council (MLC) elections in Maharashtra and a few other states. The Maharashtra MLC candidates were announced on Sunday night. BJP president Nitin Nabin and the party’s national general secretary (organisation), BL Santhosh, presented a comprehensive overview of the upcoming Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council (MLC) elections in various states. The two leaders briefed the Central Election Committee on the BJP’s prospects in the Rajya Sabha elections on a state-by-state basis and assessed the NDA’s chances of securing victories in the contests. According to sources, the committee was informed that the BJP is expected to win three to four additional Rajya Sabha seats over and above those currently held by the party and due for election. During the discussions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised state units to undertake a thorough assessment of the electoral arithmetic for their respective Rajya Sabha seats. He suggested that the party leadership should take a final call after reviewing detailed feedback and preparations from the states.
Sources said no individual names were discussed during the meeting. Deliberations remained focused on the Rajya Sabha seats the BJP expects to win and the broader electoral scenario across states. MLC elections in a few states were also reviewed, but no specific candidates were taken up for discussion. The CEC authorised the BJP national president and the respective state units to finalise candidates for the Legislative Council elections. The meeting assumes significance as the BJP generally does not convene Central Election Committee meetings for Rajya Sabha candidate selections, making Sunday’s deliberations particularly important. Following the CEC meeting, Prime Minister Modi held a separate meeting with senior BJP leaders, including Nitin Nabin, BL Santhosh, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh. Sources said the leaders reviewed organisational preparedness and discussed appointments at both the national and state levels. Party insiders believe Nitin Nabin’s new team could be announced as early as next week. Sunday’s CEC meeting is being viewed as the final meeting of the current election committee before the anticipated organisational reshuffle.
Nitin Nabin has also convened a meeting of BJP national office-bearers on Monday. Within the party, the gathering is being viewed as potentially the last meeting of the current team of national office-bearers before a new organisational structure is unveiled in the coming days.
