(Image source: Money Control) Skyroot Aerospace is preparing for its next phase of growth, with a new rocket launch planned this year and more advanced missions lined up ahead. Speaking at the Network18 Rising Bharat Summit in Bengaluru, co-founder Pawan Chandana outlined the company’s roadmap and shared insights into the challenges of building rockets. The entrepreneur also said that in the coming five years, space-based data centres could be common and also encouraged people to take the entrepreneurial jump.
“The next launch will happen this year. Next year, we will have bigger rockets. It will be a few years before we can launch reusable rockets," Chandana said. He stressed that the company is taking a gradual approach, scaling up its capabilities step by step rather than rushing into complex technologies like reusable launch systems. Chandana also shared a behind-the-scenes moment from Skyroot’s maiden launch. Despite years of preparation, a last-minute glitch threatened to delay liftoff. The fix, however, was surprisingly simple. “Like in India, if something doesn’t work, what we do is switch off, switch on. We just did that," he said, adding that the issue was resolved immediately after restarting the system. Private Space Race Chandana highlighted how exclusive the private rocket launch space still is. “There are only two private sector companies that have launched rockets in the world," he said, underlining the high barriers to entry in this sector.
He also spoke about how the global space economy is evolving. “Space market valuations have changed after Musk announced the launch of a million rockets," he said, referring to Elon Musk and the ambitious scale of future launches, which has reshaped investor expectations. Advice For Entrepreneurs Chandana encouraged young founders to explore opportunities across the growing space ecosystem. His advice was direct: “First of all, start a company." He pointed to several high-potential areas including data centres, communication satellites, earth observation, and space-based data services. “Enter data centers, communication satellites, data from space, earth observation. You choose what is the biggest thing, in that particular sector which excites you," he said. He also highlighted the surge in interest in India’s private space sector. “We receive 1000 application for every job listing for Skyroot," Chandana said, noting the strong enthusiasm among young professionals to be part of the country’s space journey.
