After suffering a stunning defeat in the recent Assembly elections, internal cracks in the TMC have widened, with several party leaders openly criticising Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. Political tensions escalated after an alleged attack on TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The party received a fresh blow on Sunday after nine TMC councillors resigned, leading to the dissolution of the Diamond Harbour municipal board.
Eight councillors of the 16-ward municipality sent their resignations on May 25, while the ninth resigned on Sunday, citing financial irregularities in the civic body, police harassment and intimidation, according to the Times of India. Diamond Harbour sub-divisional officer (SDO) Ayan Dattagupta has taken over as administrator of the civic body. The setback is particularly significant as Diamond Harbour is Abhishek Banerjee’s backyard and has long been considered an ironclad TMC stronghold. TMC Meeting Called Off Meanwhile, a scheduled meeting of newly elected TMC legislators to be chaired by Mamata Banerjee was abruptly called off on Sunday after nearly 60 MLAs failed to attend.
The meeting had been scheduled to take place at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in Kolkata at 3 pm. However, only around 20 MLAs reportedly reached the venue, prompting the party leadership to postpone the gathering for the time being. Addressing reporters outside the residence, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the absence of legislators was linked to the “sudden and emergent ground situation" following attacks on party leaders and workers. He said the absentee MLAs had requested the meeting to be postponed. Attacks On TMC Leaders The controversy unfolded against the backdrop of protests across the state over the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee on May 30 in Sonarpur. Abhishek was allegedly pelted with bricks, stones and eggs while visiting families affected by post-poll violence in South 24 Parganas. The TMC blamed the BJP for orchestrating the incident, but the saffron party rejected the allegations and claimed residents were expressing anger against the Trinamool leadership.
The matter escalated when Kalyan Banerjee alleged that he too had been attacked in Hooghly, terming the incident as an “attempt to murder". The TMC has announced a sit-in protest on June 2 at Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Esplanade, Kolkata.
